Tax Commissioner

We have an interim tax commissioner and we need a special election for that seat on May 25th.

County Attorney Ernstes: A local law enacted by the general assembly, which only applies to Dekalb County, creates the office of the tax commissioner.

The sitting tax commissioner, Lawson, retired on December 31st of last year and named Irvin Johnson as his deputy chief, who under the law can succeed the sitting tax commissioner to the office.

Under certain circumstances, when the tax commissioner names a deputy chief and that commissioner leaves office early, instead of the deputy chief filling the office through the current term, a special election takes place to fill it. So, Lawson retires. Johnson is chief deputy and we consider him interim tax commissioner.

Two elections will take place on the 24th of May. The first of those two is the special election to fill the seat through this term. The second is the actual general primary for the next four year turn. You can run for both at the same time.

New business

ESPLOST referendum. Atlanta, Decatur, and Dekalb asked for a special election to consider the continuation of the ESPLOST penny sales tax. Has to go before the board of commissioners, but the current motion asks that this board approve it preliminarily. Motion passes.
