Whitfield County Board of Elections Meeting Notes 01/13/22

Members present: Sparky Kelehear (Chair), Carol Byers, Rob Cowan

Registrar: Mary Hammontree

  1. Redistricting—M. Hammontree reported they have received the state House maps, and the changes will affect the boundaries for 18 precincts. They are waiting on county commission and school board maps that will have to be approved by the state legislature. The county staff are obligated to make changes by February 18, which she said will not be a problem.
  2. Hammontree reported they will be working on getting the word out about the redistricting changes. She said they will be preparing posters to put up at places such as community centers to let voters know they will be getting new voting cards. She said one precinct voting location will be changed this year, but probably not until November.
  3. In response to a question from S. Kelehear, Hammontree said there are no plans to combine precincts.
  4. Hammontree reportedly attended a regional meeting hosted by the Secretary of State’s office. They provided information to the local boards about a new voting system. Hammontree said they have had problems with the old system and the new one will be an improvement. It will have more functionality, be more secure, more user friendly, and accessible by multiple browsers. It will be in place by March, in time for qualifying elections.
  5. There was a brief discussion about the next election. The primaries will be held on May 24, with early voting starting May 2.  Hammontree said they are not planning on providing for Sunday voting.
  6. They had a short discussion about the legislature making additional changes. A bill is being propoesed that woulf provide for the removal of drop boxes, Hammontree said.
