Introduction
This meeting was called to discuss precinct relocations and Sunday voting.
At the next meeting, the board will discuss the Voter Registration Report.
Precinct Relocation Proposals
The motion to relocate the Blackmon Road precinct to the Salvation Army building was approved. The new location on Warm Springs Road resolves the traffic issue on Blackmon Road.
A motion was approved to combine two precincts, bringing Columbus down to twenty-six (26) precincts. Fox Recreation Center and Northside Baptist Church will be combined and relocated to the student center of Columbus Technical College on Manchester Expressway. Benefits to this location include two large parking lots and the bus stop being next to the student center.
Sunday Voting
Sunday voting will be held at the City Services building on the two Sundays of the early voting period. Hours will be from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This measure is effective as of May 24th, 2016. Sunday voting will only be held during general primaries and generation elections–and not for presidential preference primaries or runoffs.
The board expressed concern that too many voters arriving at 9:00 AM on the first Sunday would pose a problem.
Chairperson Jenkins commented that dependency on the surrounding churches may be a problem. Many churches disapproved of Sunday voting due to 8:00 AM and 11:00 AMservices, according to ministers who sat in on the meeting.
The board was of the opinion that the opportunity has been provided for citizens to vote, and the ultimate responsibility lies in the hands of citizens to take advantage of it.
