Although the Lincoln County Board of elections has canceled its June meeting Its Board of Commissioners has been busy.
The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners voted to add a non-binding referendum to the November ballot asking voters to approve a plan to close four polling locations and keep one in the north, south, and middle of the county open.
While this plan is not indicative of actions the Board of elections will take it is something to take note of. Elections Director Lilvender Bolton has supported polling location closures in Lincoln county.
Public Sentiment has largely gone against the consolidation of locations. Statements previously from the public during an attempt earlier this year include:
Dr. Holloway of the Ministerial Line in Lincoln County: “I don’t think you understand the geography of Lincoln County. I’m asking the board not to close these locations as many do not have transportation to go elsewhere. Please vote tonight that we will have more polling locations!
Denise Freeman: “Studies have shown that closing polling precincts has an adverse effect on voter turnout. They claim this will save money on the number of poll workers but would they not need to hire more poll workers to bolster the three locations left in addition to all the workers that would need to be hired to provide rides to voters”
