Budget Discussions: A statement of revenues and expenditures ending 6/30/24 and the County attorney fees were questioned; 174.32% of the proposed budget for that line item has been spent; $50,000 was budgeted for an attorney but $87,159.65 has been spent; Supervisor of Elections asked law firm for an itemized statement but that would include documents that have to be heavily redacted; however, there was pushback that the BOE should be able to see the documents unredacted because the attorney represents the BOE
Supervisor Updates: There is a new BOE building being built but the BOE will not move until after the November election; the building may be ready for use for early voting; Coffee will start accepting absentee ballot applications on August 19; early voting starts October 15
Public Comments: Citizen (Katherine Grant) raised concerns about cybersecurity breaches everywhere, so would liketo have emergency paper ballots on hand; BOE supervisor said they were on hand when there were problems with the machines in the Broxton in May but Grant says they weren’t used; also asked if any BOE member talked to Misty (from 2020 BOE breach) and 1 BOE member (Matthew) said she called him and said she heard about issues with the election in May
Citizen (Oivia Coley) asked BOE to anticipate issues with voting , asked for redacted documents from the attorney; BOE supervisor said she’s completely confident the election will go smoothly; also asked if BOE is prepared for safety concerns; Ministers in support of Sunday voting and Souls to the Polls
Commenter asked the BOE if they had watched the State Election Board meeting and if they were aware of the new rules. The Supervisor of Elections and the BOE members said that they had not watched it; one BOE member (Matthew) asked me to elaborate on what was said during the meeting; Commenter said they wanted to bring the changes to their attention and possibly consult their attorney about how it would affect how they proceed in November.
