Cobb County Board of Elections Meeting 02/08/21

Meeting called to order at 4:00pm

All board members were present either in person or remotely plus Janine Eveler and attorney.

PUBLIC COMMENT

Ruben Jones – couldn’t hear him very well, but his comments appeared to be positive ones regarding Cobb County elections.

Monica Delancey – activist – she also complimented Cobb BOE and all the workers for the many opportunities to vote and vote safely, and also for providing work (at the polls) for folks who are out of work due to the pandemic.  She also talked about a grant that her organization received from Oprah Winfrey for rent assistance in Riverside.  The grant provided $1000 rent or mortgage assistance to 45 residents.  Eased some of the pain caused by current economic situation.  Her group has also instituted an Oprah Pay It Forward option where 10 more families will receive rent assistance after participating in a workshop.

[end of public comment]

Approval of the minutes from 1/14/21.

PUBLIC HEARING

Initially there was to be a hearing on whether or not to remove 2 voters, Subhen and Susmita Ghosh, from the list of electors due to residence disqualification (see attached agenda for details of the original issue).  It appears that since then, the Ghoshes have sold their property in Indiana (cancelled their homestead exemption) and permanently moved to Georgia.  So, their Georgia registration will continue to be valid.

Phil Daniell reminded listeners that you can only be registered to vote in one state, wherever your primary residence is located.

Pat Gartland asked Janine Eveler if there was a way to check things like this.  Janine stated that the State of Georgia joined ERIC group (not sure if my acronym is correct) for validation of residency, but counties do not yet have access to it.

Phil Daniell reminded listeners that if they receive a letter from Cobb BOE about issues with voting records, please comply so that the issues can be resolved quickly.

DIRECTOR OF ELECTIONS

Janine had no report for this meeting, and the board members had no questions for her.

Phil expressed his appreciation for her hard work and that of her staff, stressful election year.

Next regular meeting is February 8, 2021 at 4pm.

BOARD COMMENTS

Pat Gartland thanked the board for their donations in memory of his wife and thanked Janine for attending service.  Over 300 people at the service.
